I Believe

I am a divorce lawyer, registered family mediator, life coach and educator. Throughout my law career I have seen the cost of adversarial negotiations, both financial and emotional. I have seen the damaging impact that a divorce can have on children. I seek to educate and empower people on how to transform the way they resolve family disputes—in a more constructive, intelligent, and amicable way than would be possible otherwise.

About Beryl McNeill

I am a divorce lawyer, registered family mediator, life coach and educator.  I seek to educate and empower people on how to transform the way they resolve family disputes—in a more constructive, intelligent, and amicable way than would be possible otherwise. I strongly believe that mutual respect and understanding go a long way toward resolving family law matters.   Throughout my law career I have seen the cost of adversarial negotiations, both financial and emotional. I have seen the damaging impact that a divorce can have on children.

I understand the often fearful, emotional early stages of divorce. Incorporating skills developed from my training as a life coach, I help clients move beyond their stress response to more logical, creative thinking. Once there, I work with clients to discover what’s truly important to them as they navigate the path forward in their separation.  I encourage clients to picture what a successful settlement would look like a year or more down the road as a means for focusing their goals.

More and more individuals are attracted to resolving their family law matters in a civil, respectful way. My clients come to me from many walks of life— they may be business owners with complicated property, engineers, teachers, nurses and/or stay at home parents with special needs children.  My clients say that even after a single consultation they feel less stressed and greater clarity about the way forward.

Career

I have been practising law for 30 years.   I was called to the B.C. Bar in Vancouver British Columbia in 1991; and the Alberta Bar in Calgary, Alberta in 1996.  In the early part of my career, I spent countless hours honing my courtroom skills.  In 2001 I took my first mediation course which eventually changed the trajectory of my entire law practice.   I now have well over 1000 hours of conflict resolution training in addition to my Life Coach Certification that I completed in 2008.   I was a partner in a boutique family law firm in Calgary from 2007 until 2012, and left the partnership to launch a new law firm, McNeill Family Law, which has the sole purpose of assisting couples negotiate or mediate their separation or divorce amicably and constructively, without the destruction that often accompanies a traditional separation or divorce.

I am a Dispute Resolution officer with the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench and have been very involved with the Canadian Bar Association, and Collaborative Law community.  I have taught segments of the Bar Admission Course for Alberta and continue to teach and coach law students on negotiating legal disputes.
